• Using a Search Engine
• You should use one or more of the search engines on the Search Engine page to find the answers to the questions in the Portfolio Presentation Document.
• I suggest using the topic "Internet History" in the keyword text fields of the search engines.
• You'll have to have patience and determination to find what you're looking for. Remember, this is a search. That means there will be uncertainly until you finally fin what you want.
• In addition to your own findings, I have provided the following URL's that I found using the same search engines you are using.
• What is a URL?
• URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator
• Every URL has 3 parts and sometimes 4 parts
  1. The protocol
     • a designation that tells your computer and the remote computer what language to speak to each other in order to exchange information
     • The common protocols used with URL's are
       • http:// - HyperText Transfer Protocol
       • ftp:// - File Transfer Protocol
       • gopher:// - Gopher (a text based system with easy-to-use menus)
       • telnet:// - Telnet (a way to "log in" to a computer remotely without actually being there)
  2. The domain name (also called "the computer name")
     • The last part of this designation tell us something about who owns the computer or what it is used for.
       • .com - commercial, business, industry
       • .net - provides internet services
       • .edu - owned by a college or univerisity
       • .gov - owned by the US government
       • .mil - owned and used by the US military
     • Two-letter endings often tell us what country the computer is in:
       • .us - United States
       • .uk - United Kingdom (England)
       • .fr - France
       • .sp - Spain
       • .de - Germany
       • ...there are many more
  3. The directory path
     • This part of sometimes left out. If you don't see it, it means that the file you are looking at in located in the "top level" directory on the computer you are accessing. We usually can't see the name of this "top level" directory.
  4. File name
     • This is the name of the actual file that we are viewing on our web browser screen. The file you are viewing right now to see this lesson is named "history.htm".

  • http:// is the protocol.
  • geocities.com is the domain name (also called the "computer name).
  • bisonhtmlis the directory path (this part is sometimes not there).
  • isinternethistory.html is the file name.
